WINEMAKER NOTES
Kenwood has prided itself on its highly acclaimed, consistent gold-medal winning Sonoma Zinfandel since it was first produced in 1970. The zest and zing of this varietal make it the winemaker's personal favorite. Our Sonoma County Zinfandel is blended from vineyards located in Sonoma County's best Zinfandel appellations, the Sonoma and Dry Creek Valleys. A portion of the blend comes from old-vine vineyards that have been producing excellent grapes since the 1940's. The abundant 2005 vintage was marked by a long summer with moderate weather which gave the grapes lots of 'hang time' on the vine. This extra period of ripening allowed the flavor of the grapes to fully develop. Harvested in mid-September to October each vineyard lot was then fermented separately in stainless steel tanks and aged individually in American and French oak barrels for 18 months. Just prior to bottling, the lots were blended to create a wine with intense raspberry jam flavors and delightful spicy notes. The 2005 vintage of Sonoma County Zinfandel is ready to drink now, but should continue to improve for another decade.
